The African Lion initial planning event took place during the week of Oct. 25, 2021, in Agadir, Morocco. Spearheaded by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa and hosted by the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, the African Lion IPE is the planning event for next year's African Lion Exercise. African Lion 22 will be a joint force headquarters validating, partnership strengthening, readiness building, multinational, multi-domain and multifunctional exercise testing the participating warfighters’ ability to deploy, fight and win in a complex, competitive and global environment. More than 7,000 participants from nine nations and NATO train together with a focus on enhancing readiness for U.S. and partner nation forces. AL21 is a multi-domain, multi-component, and multi-national exercise, which employs a full array of mission capabilities with the goal to strengthen interoperability among participants.

African Lion 21: Key Leader Engagement Onboard the USS Hershel "Woody" Williams

A key leader engagement and tour onboard the USS Hershel "Woody" Williams, a U.S. Navy vessel, provided an opportunity for Maj. Gen. Andrew M. Rohling, commander of U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa, to meet with partners from Moroccan Southern Zone Command. The leaders were able to discuss interoperability between the two partner nations, their potential as coalition partners, and the capability of USS Hershel "Woody" Williams as an asset to the African area of responsibility, as well as expectations for the African Lion 21 exercise.

African Lion 21: 839th Transportation Battalion dock operations at Livorno Port

Logisticians and Transporters from the 839th Transportation Battalion, 598th Transportation BDE (SDDC) and Southern European Task Force-Africa, worked together at the port in Livorno, Italy, May 20, 2021, to upload the Military Sealift Command Vessel, USNS Trenton. The equipment will transit from the Livorno port to Agadir, Morocco in support of exercise African Lion 21.

African Land Forces Summit 2021 Preview

Since 2010, the African Land Forces Summit has been of great importance in building partnerships with African Land Force chiefs and discuss security concerns. This year, taking into consideration travel limitations and the safety of country delegations, the U.S. Army is utilizing a widely accepted communication technology to host the ninth annual ALFS on May 19. Gathered together into smaller, regionally focused groups, land force leaders – including land chiefs and senior enlisted leaders – from across the African continent will discuss challenges and opportunities focused on this year’s ALFS theme: “Maintaining Security in a Degraded Environment.”

As part of the Air Assault exercise during Swift Response21, Sky Soldiers board Blackhawks and Chinooks from 1st Battalion, 214th Aviation Regiment, 12th Combat Aviation Brigade and head to assault an objective at Novo Selo Training Area, Bulgaria.
After landing, paratroopers moved out to capture key points at the drop zones and clear the enemy of all of their defensive positions. Thanks to the resistance by our allies in the Bulgarian Armed Forces acting as enemy forces, our units received tough and realistic training!
Swift Response 21 will occur May 6-11, as the airborne operation portion of DEFENDER-Europe 21. It will validate U.S. European Command's ability to send high readiness forces into a designated area by conducting an airborne exercise consisting of strategic jumps as part of a Joint Forcible Entry (JFE) in three countries to seize key terrain.

Kirkpatrick Workman, Paratrooper assigned to 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, talks about mortar training as part of Exercise Eagle Sokol 21 at Pocek Range in Postonja, Slovenia, Mar. 10, 2021 under Covid-19 prevention conditions. Exercise Eagle Sokol is a bilateral training exercise with the Slovenian Armed Forces focused on the rapid deployment and assembly of forces and team cohesion with weapon systems tactics and procedures. Exercises such as this build a foundation of teamwork and readiness between NATO allies. Artillery paratroopers with 4th Battalion, 319th (Airborne) Field Artillery Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade are the first conventional unit in Europe to fire the BONUS Mark II artillery round. French NATO allies in the 93e Régiment D’artillerie De Montagne provided critical mentorship and logistical support in Canjuers, France as our paratroopers executed these fire missions.
The round was created by the French and Swedish militaries and recently acquired by the U.S. Army. This round directly bolsters military defense and deterrence in Europe by providing precision, anti-armored capabilities for conventional artillery units.
The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the U.S. Army's Contingency Response Force in Europe, providing rapidly deployable forces to the United States Europe, Africa and Central Command areas of responsibility. Forward deployed across Italy and Germany, the brigade routinely trains alongside NATO allies and partners to build partnerships and strengthen the alliance.
