Surgeon devotes career to battlefield trauma care

What began as a way to practice medicine and pay for college has become a life calling for one U.S. Army surgeon. Col. Jennifer Gurney, a surgeon with the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research at the Joint Base San Antonio – Fort Sam Houston, Texas, says that her reason to continue her 20-year career is to help build the training and standards it takes to maintain Soldier readiness on the battlefield.

The JAG Corps must seek more opportunities for joint work, especially for its new officers. Where possible, it should institutionalize those opportunities and relationships, so that Army JAG participation in LSE 21 does not need to depend on a particular SJA. Many of our actual operations are joint, but so often, our training and our thinking are not. A future JAG Corps, like the rest of the force, should be ready to operate as part of one joint team.

Medical professionals from the Senegalese Armed forces and U.S. Army 44th Medical Brigade perform hip replacement surgery on a Senegalese patient during MEDREX Senegal 22-1 in Dakar, Senegal. The team of 16 medical professionals from the 44th Medical Brigade, Fort Bragg, N.C., working with Senegal Armed Force members at Quakam Military Hospital Jan. 24 to Feb 11, 2022, is scheduled to perform a wide range of medical services over the three-week exercise. A MEDREX, or medical readiness exercise, is coordinated by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa. The African continent is a complex landscape politically, economically, and culturally. Africa is no less complex in its religious landscape, and therefore the impact of religion on operations in Africa would require careful and in-depth analysis in order to be useful to commanders.

Financial managers play a critical in this process by integrating the wide variety of funding sources and authorities necessary to resource competition in Africa including: Security Force Assistance (SFA) events, JCS exercises, senior leader engagements (SLEs), and Army Support to Other Services (ASOS). This paper provides a brief overview of the complex tasks and coordination necessary to successfully resource SFA and exercises activities in order to compete on the African Continent.
