Italian National Day of Remembrance

The NATO, Italian and American flags are at half mast as Italy marks the first national day of remembrance for Covid-19 victims, March 18. The Vicenza Military Community supported the host nation government initiative with a minute of silence beginning at 11 a.m. to pay tribute to the victims of the coronavirus pandemic, which, as of March 18, has killed more than 102,000 people in Italy. Kirkpatrick Workman, Paratrooper assigned to 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, talks about mortar training as part of Exercise Eagle Sokol 21 at Pocek Range in Postonja, Slovenia, Mar. 10, 2021 under Covid-19 prevention conditions. Exercise Eagle Sokol is a bilateral training exercise with the Slovenian Armed Forces focused on the rapid deployment and assembly of forces and team cohesion with weapon systems tactics and procedures. Exercises such as this build a foundation of teamwork and readiness between NATO allies. The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the U.S. Army Contingency Response Force in Europe, capable of projecting ready forces anywhere in the U.S. European, Africa or Central Commands‘ areas of responsibility. Artillery paratroopers with 4th Battalion, 319th (Airborne) Field Artillery Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade are the first conventional unit in Europe to fire the BONUS Mark II artillery round. French NATO allies in the 93e Régiment D’artillerie De Montagne provided critical mentorship and logistical support in Canjuers, France as our paratroopers executed these fire missions. The round was created by the French and Swedish militaries and recently acquired by the U.S. Army. This round directly bolsters military defense and deterrence in Europe by providing precision, anti-armored capabilities for conventional artillery units. The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the U.S. Army's Contingency Response Force in Europe, providing rapidly deployable forces to the United States Europe, Africa and Central Command areas of responsibility. Forward deployed across Italy and Germany, the brigade routinely trains alongside NATO allies and partners to build partnerships and strengthen the alliance. (U.S. Army video by Staff Sgt.
